It’s the Teachers’ Turn–Learning Through Playing with Models!

Fifteen teachers from Florida to Oregon played in 3D Molecular Designs’ (3DMD’s) Modeling the Molecular World for a week in July.

Whether they came to explore 3DMD’s foundational kits, learn strategies to engage their students in modeling activities, or deepen their own molecular knowledge, they found it and more! 

“[It] exceeded my expectations! Not only did we get to experience being “students” playing with the models but also learned from exemplar educators who showed how they teach with the models. Additionally, I was like a college student again! I earned my BS in the late 90s and haven’t taught AP Bio since 2011. I learned so much content as well, which will help me level up my teaching and students’ learning experience,” wrote one end-of-course respondent.

Essentially, that’s why all educators come – to improve their students’ learning experience. 

The bonus is that they get to have some fun! Nearly all wrote that we not only met their expectations...we exceeded them! 

“Yes and then some! I learned different ideas of how to incorporate the models and modeling process. Modeling can be used before, during, and after learning about these topics.”

“I like the conceptual framework of the models, consistent with underlying chemistry and bio. Great illustrations of investigative learning. Love the idea and implementation of foundational models.”

“You exceeded them! I thought we were just going to learn how to use the kits, but Tim taught us biochemistry and molecular science, Dan taught us useful pedagogy, Mark taught us engineering, and Heather taught us patience.” 

“Yes, expectations were met and exceeded as I also learned so much protein biology, history of the different scientific discoveries and the modeling materials are incredible - so well designed!”  

“Though I am exhausted, I feel like I’ve learned a ton and have so much (non-literal) energy to implement and improve my courses.”

We were a bit exhausted, ourselves, but loved spending the week with these high school and college educators!
