Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from synapses. Your students will:

  • Discover how three amino acids collaborate to cleave the neurotransmitter 
  • Demonstrate the targeting of  enzymes by insecticides for mosquito control
  • Explore variation in the gene resulting from a mutation that blocks the insecticide from binding. 
The substrate, insecticide, and mutant amino acid side chain bind to the enzyme with magnets to engage students as they modify the model.
