2023 CASE Palm Springs Conference Schedule

3D Molecular Designs will be at the 2023 California Science Education Conference showing how our interactive kits and models allow students to use their inner curiosity to explore and understand complex molecular science. Plus, we will give away one of our kits used at each session. Join us for sessions in room Smoketree D and visit us at Booth #405!

Friday, October 20th

9:30 - 10:45am

Session Title: Exploring the Properties of Water and Cell Membranes
Presenter: Keri Shingleton
Session Description: Explore the properties of water and discover the structure and function of cell membranes with engaging models that allow students to drive their learning!
Featured kits and models: Phospholipid & Membrane Transport Kit©, Water Kit©

12:30 - 1:45pm

Session Title: Folding and Molding: Hands-On Protein Structure
Presenter: Keri Shingleton
Session Description: Protein shape is determined by interactions between amino acids that are specifically ordered in the primary structure of proteins. The shape is critical for proper protein functioning.  Explore the forces that determine protein shape by actively modeling protein structure!
Featured kits and models: Amino Acid Starter Kit©

2:00 - 3:15pm

Session Title:  Making Sense of Genetic Information Through Modeling: Replication, Transcription, & Translation
Presenter: Chris Chou
Session Description: Identify how modeling can reveal student understanding of DNA and RNA structure and function through strategies that make student thinking visible to investigate the elegance of the Central Dogma of biology.

Saturday, October 21st

8:00 - 9:15am

Session Title: DNA With A Twist:  Using Multiple Models In The Classroom
Presenter: Keri Shingleton
Session Description: Examine how modeling deepens student engagement. Explore carefully designed models to discover basic features of DNA structure and function using an atomically accurate model. Model nucleotides, DNA and RNA polymers, genetic sequences, genetic engineering, and an endless number of possibilities!

9:30 - 10:45am

Session Title: Unraveling Multiple Representations of Chromosomes to Reveal Student Thinking
Presenter: Chris Chou
Session Description: Bridge the gap between molecular and microscopic representations in genetics. Investigate hands-on 3D models that amplify traditional bio labs for lasting student understanding.
Featured kits and models: Chromosome Connections Kit©

2:30 - 3:45pm

Session Title: Get to Know H2O with Hands-on Models
Presenter: Keri Shingleton
Session Description: Learn how students can explore complex properties of water while manipulating magnetic molecules that also teach model literacy for learning all year long. The simple structure of water defines its complex properties that can easily be explored through modeling.
