Session Title: The Cell Membrane is a Marvel
Presenter: Jen Zinman
Session Description: The cell membrane is a marvel. Without its unique properties, there would be no cells. In this session, we employ models to understand how the characteristics of phospholipids create this barrier. We will then explore how this barrier allows cells to regulate their internal space, examining how materials like water, sugars, and salts can move in and out of the cell. Learn how you can use a model to explain to your students why an IV bag cannot be just pure water and what osmosis is.

Session Title: Mitosis and Meiosis – What's the Difference?  
Presenter: Jen Zinman
Session Description: Students often struggle with understanding the similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis. If mitosis produces new cells, why go through meiosis? Students often stumble over the repetition of vocabulary. If it’s different in each process, why do we call it prophase in both? In this workshop, we will use models to compare and contrast the starting and ending cells and processes of mitosis and meiosis. Along the way, the models will be used to highlight how each process benefits the fitness of the organism and answer questions such as why is it essential to produce identical cells in mitosis while meiosis generates tremendous variety. We will demonstrate how the use of tools can allow your students to anchor their understanding of mitosis and meiosis.

Session Title: Solids, Liquids, and Gases – What are Those Molecules Doing?

Session Description: We all learn the states of matter in elementary school. Using water models, discover how to introduce elementary students to what molecules are, and why they're the same molecule.

Session Title: The Future is CRISPR
Presenter: Diane Sigalas
Session Description: Solid, liquid, gas - we all learn the states of matter in elementary school, but we often stop at showing physical examples. In this workshop, we will link what we see as water changes from solid to liquid to gas to what is happening to the molecules by using water models. These models let us introduce our elementary students to what molecules are and how their physical properties can change but still be exactly the same molecule they started with.
