Membrane Student Modeling Pack Classroom Resources

Activities and Recommendations

1. Model how phospholipids spontaneously assemble in water. Use the printable water beaker graphic and the foam water molecules to form:
     a. a film on the surface of the water
     b. a micelle, submerged under water
     c. a lipid bilayer that is submerged and contains water on the inside
2. Use the water molecules, sodium ions, potassium ions, glucose and ATP to model how substances cross membranes.
3. Model action potential using the printable straight membrane graphic. Move the rotating tan pieces as necessary.
