Water Student Modeling Pack Classroom Resources
Activities and Recommendations
1. Use the water molecules, ions, methane and methanol to explore physical and chemical properties of water including adhesion, cohesion, polarity, hydrogen bonding, surface tension, states of matter and solubility.
2. To model methanol, convert one of your water molecules to a hydroxyl group by removing one hydrogen (twist cap until you can pry it off with your fingernail). Remove the hydrogen cap and post (look for the small gray triangles pointing to one hydrogen – only one hydrogen has a removeable post) and insert the hydroxyl group.
