Tour of a Human Cell© Journal Articles by Dr. David Goodsell

 

Scientist, author and artist Dr. David S. Goodsell recently published From Atoms to Cells: Using Mesoscale Landscapes to Construct Visual Narratives in collaboration with Margaret Franzen and Tim Herman from the Milwaukee School of Engineering Center for BioMolecular Modeling. The article explores how mesoscale illustrations integrate data from molecular and cellular biology; how methods for building and visualizing 3D mesoscale models are being developed; and how mesoscale illustrations provide important context in molecular biology education. 

When writing his book, The Machinery of Life1, David Goodsell wanted to include a panoramic view of a eukaryotic cell that would feature major components of the cell, including the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, and cytoplasm. The image became 8 panels displayed on 4 sets of facing pages in The Machinery of Life.
 
As the book was being printed, Dr. Goodsell began working with 3D Molecular Designs to print the Tour of a Human Cell© as a poster and make it available to science teachers for their classrooms. 
 
In this 2011 article published by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Goodsell describes the panorama in detail, providing:

  • Descriptions of the proteins and other molecular structures featured in the panorama
  • References
