3D Molecular Designs Models are at the Olympics

Local Company 3D Prints Models to be Shown at 2024 Paris Olympics

[MILWAUKEE, WIS. July 30, 2024] – 3D Molecular Designs (3DMD) is proud to announce its collaboration with Sanofi, one of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies, to create innovative 3D printed antibody models for Sanofi’s historic corporate event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The commission of these models underscores 3DMD’s commitment to advancing scientific understanding and education through cutting-edge technology.
Sanofi’s presence at the Paris Olympics represents a critical milestone in the company’s ongoing transformation and its largest corporate activation to date. Under the banner of the “Igniting Potential” campaign, Sanofi aims to draw parallels between the dedication of its scientists and the perseverance of Olympic athletes.

“Creating these 3D printed antibody models for the Paris Olympics allows us to showcase the incredible advancements in biotechnology and the pivotal role antibodies play in modern medicine,” said Mark Hoelzer, Partner and Material Development Director at 3D Molecular Designs. “Our models not only provide a tangible representation of scientific concepts but also serve as a bridge to engage and inspire the public. In line with the campaign’s theme, 3DMD’s meticulously crafted 3D printed antibody models will be showcased to highlight Sanofi’s groundbreaking scientific work and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation. These models will be an integral part of Sanofi’s interactive displays, allowing the public to gain a tangible understanding of the company’s contributions to healthcare.

This is not the first time 3DMD designed and printed models for high-profile events. Hoelzer designed models for the Nobel Prize Foundation for a traveling exhibit starting in Dubai. 3DMD has also made models for Nobel Prize winners and many notable institutions like Harvard University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Berkley, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK), Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Vanderbilt University and many biotech/pharmaceutical companies. The antibody shown in the photo with Hoelzer is the largest 3D printed model the company has made.

Local Small Business Wins 5-Year Science Education Partnership Award

3D Molecular Designs to develop classroom materials and professional learning courses focused on 
infectious diseases

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (May 29, 2023) – 3D Molecular Designs (3DMD) receives $1,283,020 of grant funding 
from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Science Education Partnership Award 
(SEPA). The Milwaukee-based small business will develop educational materials and professional learning 
experiences focused on infectious diseases. This is 3D Molecular Designs’ first SEPA grant.

3D Molecular Designs is a family-owned science education company that develops interactive kits and 
models focused on core ideas in biology, chemistry, and life sciences for students. Funds from the NIGMS 
SEPA Grant will be used for material development and professional learning for secondary science 
teachers focused on infectious diseases.

“We are so pleased to receive this NIH SEPA funding. Now it’s possible for us to quickly translate current 
cutting-edge infectious disease science into manipulative kits and models that can be field tested in high 
school classrooms within two years,” said Tim Herman, PhD, principal investigator. “At the same time, 
we’ll be providing professional development in this area for high school science teachers. The Covid-19 
Pandemic illustrated how important it is for people to understand therapies for emerging diseases.”

This summer, half a dozen educators from the 3DMD Model Teacher Program© will come together in 
Milwaukee to collaborate and advise on material development which includes student activities, 
classroom resources, kits and models, and more. Each summer, 3D Molecular Designs hosts over two 
dozen science educators from across the country for a weeklong professional development course, 
Modeling the Molecular World. This annual summer course is a prerequisite for participation in the 
advanced SEPA course, which will be offered beginning Summer 2024.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences supports basic research that increases understanding 
of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and 
prevention. The NIGMS SEPA program is awarded annually and supports educational activities that 
encourage pre-college students from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies in science, 
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 3D Molecular Designs’ grant will fund the classroom-based project geared towards first- and second-year high school biology students.
